One of my favorite and go to bourbons is Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve 9 year. Not long ago I was able to pick up a Knob Creek 12 year at one of my local stores for retail and was eager to see how the extra 3 years of age impact the flavor profile. Overall I feel that the extra years of age do help refine and mellow the flavors.
The quintessential bourbon flavors that are found in the flagship Knob Creek 9 year are definitely present in the 12 year expression. There is a touch more oak and vanilla creaminess found in the 12 year bottle that I really like. I would really like to try this at a higher proof point. I feel that the extra 20 proof points in the 9 year barrel reserve vs the 9 year really elevates the barrel reserve to another level. For the extra $30 over the regular 9 year bottle, I think this one is worth a try if you can find it at retail. I don’t think I would pay over retail price for it though.
