Chattanooga Whiskey Silver Oak Cabernet Cask Finished

Chattanooga Whiskey Cabernet Cask Finished

Chattanooga Whiskey Silver Oak Cabernet Cask Finished is the 3rd release of Chattanooga Whiskey’s fished whiskey series. This is one of the most unique finished whiskeys I have tried.

I tend to avoid finished whiskeys, but do try them from time to time. To me the typical $100-$200 price tag we see on most finished whiskeys is overpriced. That’s one area where Chattanooga Whiskey Silver Oak Cabernet Cask Finished whiskey is different. Priced at $59, it is a more affordable finished whiskey.

This bottle is finished in barrels from one of the most iconic vineyards in America, Silver Oak Vineyards. Silver Oak Winery produces some highly sought after wine in the world. I have tried Silver Oak’s Cabernet once and it is fantastic. Because of this, I was very interested in how this whiskey would compare.

On the nose and front palate, the Cabernet qualities are clearly present and are wonderful. But as the sip gets to the back of your palate, there is a very odd pickle flavor that I have never experienced in whiskey before. The pickle flavor lingers on to the finish which fades into the sweet malt flavor I love from Chattanooga Whiskey. I assume the pickle note is from the Cabernet and malt flavors blending together. I am not a fan of pickles in general, so the pickle quality is a bit off putting for me. But the remainder of the profile of this bottle is very good. Overall, I think if you are looking for something unique, this one is definitely a unique expression.

To highlight and enhance the qualities of these finishing barrels, our distillers selected a range of 5 single malt mash bills, each containing a range of toasted, roasted & caramel malts – including a custom-toasted barley malt developed with our friends at Riverbend Malt House in Asheville, NC. Aged for greater than 4 years, including over 18 months in the Cabernet barrels, the result showcases a dynamic balance between bold flavors of malt, fruit & toasted oak – highlighting the best best of both wine & whiskey.
